We spoke to Finlay Shakespeare from Future Sound Systems, who gave us a look at Cric, their standalone analog desktop synth with a comprehensive feature set. At its core is a 32x24 pin matrix, enabling flexible modulation routing without traditional patch cables.
Cric features three oscillators that can be used conventionally or with recombination techniques borrowed from FSS's Eurorack modules. A state-variable filter with non-linear inputs and a wavefolder in the resonance path adds to the sonic palette. The synth also includes four looping cyclical function generators (CFGs), a mic preamp, headphone output, and both balanced and unbalanced I/O.
Finlay demonstrated several unique patching techniques, including oscillator switching and FM to create harmonically rich textures. The analog-only signal path avoids MIDI and digital control entirely, focusing instead on immediacy and hands-on synthesis. The pin matrix also supports quick visual recall and modulation mixing/splitting directly on the panel.
