Stefan Schmidt is a smart guy, he founded Native Instruments for starters - so he knows about er, instruments. His new venture - NonLinear Labs are showing the new C-15 - a high end players instrument with a pretty uncompromising approach to design. using high quality parts, inside is an embedded PC running a dedicated synth engine with just two sine wave generators, with feedback, a resonator filter, 5 effects, all with complex feedback routing.
Its capable of some highly unique sounds, even with what seems on the face of it a fairly simple structure. Emphasis is on playability, with extremely high resolution control of velocity, aftertouch and four external controls, plus the two long ribbon controllers they want it to be played.
We had a chat with Stefan about the instrument with some lovely playing from Federico Solazzo.
Its not cheap, and wont be for everyone, but its a good thing that it exists, NonLinear Labs are aiming for a high quality playable and expressive instrument, the price tag of €4,000 euros reflects that.
Older Music Machines & the People Who Still Use Them
Developments for Korg's instrument have been slow but promising.
