Peterson Launches StroboStomp EVH

US Tune just like Eddie - sweetened tunings mirror the songs on the 1978 debut album      03/11/26

Peterson has launched StroboStomp EVH, a new version of their stompbox tuner dedicated to Eddie Van Halen. This is what they have to say about it...

Backstage, under the red glow of a spinning Peterson strobe wheel, Eddie Van Halen tuned up the sound that would become rock history. The StroboStomp EVH carries that same legendary ±0.1 cent accuracy forward, trading the mechanical disc for a large, high-definition LCD strobe display with a variable-color LED backlight. Same red glow, same rock-solid precision, now in a pedal tuner inspired by one of rock's most iconic guitarists.

Choose between pop-less true bypass or buffered output to preserve your tone without compromise. Alongside more than 158 Sweetened and Guided Tunings, 13 exclusive EVH Sweeteners, created track-by-track from Eddie Van Halen's landmark 1978 debut, let you play along in perfect tune with the original recordings.

Main Features:
    •    True Strobe 0.1 Cent Accuracy
    •    13 exclusive EVH Sweetened Tunings - derived from his 1978 debut album
    •    11 companion 4-string bass Sweeteners, so bass and guitar land in the same sonic space
    •    Large HD Colour Display - save your favourite tuning to unique colours
    •    Buffered or Silent Pop-Free True Bypass
    •    Over 158 Sweetened and Guided Tunings on board, with USB connectivity for custom tuning

Tuned to the record, not to the tab

The StroboStomp EVH includes a set of custom Sweetener™ tuning presets calibrated to the guitar tunings Eddie Van Halen used across the entirety of his first album, released in 1978. Each preset reproduces the specific tuning used on a given track, allowing players to match the recorded tunings quickly and accurately. The accompanying bass presets complement this perfectly, allowing the whole band to capture the original tuning of these classic songs in their full glory. Each of the thirteen presets on board corresponds to a specific track, because the tuning on Eddie's 1978 debut album moves slightly from song to song. The entire album was cut in Eb Standard and the guitars sit just above it almost throughout, with one exception which is slightly flat. Some tracks used two presets either for different guitars or different song sections. The differences amount to quarter and eighth tone deviations from standard E flat tuning with each string individually offset by a precise amount. Needless to say, only a Peterson can accurately handle such detail.

A tuner that resolves to the nearest cent can get you close, but it cannot show you where inside that window to stop, so playing along with the record stays a matter of guesswork and bent strings. A strobe does not guess. The pattern stands still when the pitch is right and drifts when it is not, and with 0.1 cent accuracy, you can now hit a target you previously couldn't see.

See your tuning in a different light

The StroboStomp EVH uses the largest tuning display Peterson has put into a pedal tuner: a 417-segment high-definition LCD with a variable colour LED backlight.

The user-selectable colours can be used to personalise the tuner or to improve readability under different stage and ambient lighting conditions. Colours can also be assigned to stock or user presets, which cuts menu navigation to almost nothing and lets you confirm the right tuning at a glance mid-set, including moving between the EVH Sweetened Tunings™ track by track.

Sweetened Tunings™

A Sweetener preset is a set of cent offsets - a deliberate deviation from the generic Equal Temperament interval spacing normally used in tuning - chosen to suit the instrument being tuned. Sweeteners are exclusive to Peterson and are designed to correct the tuning compromises inherent in most instruments, without any modification to the instrument itself. The StroboStomp EVH also offers remote, hands-free, step-through preset selection for rapid re-tuning onstage.

Beyond the EVH presets, the StroboStomp EVH carries Peterson's full library: guitar, acoustic, baritone, 7-string and bass Sweeteners, Buzz Feiten, pedal and lap steel, bluegrass, orchestral, harp, historic temperaments and world instruments, plus a bank of artist tunings. If you have never been happy with how your instrument tunes up, a Sweetener is often the thing that changes it. It simply sounds better - and it brings recordings of stacked guitars to life in a way standard tuning does not.
