We spoke to Athan and Andrew from the MIDI Association at Music China 2026 about MIDI 2.0, including profiles, Network MIDI 2 and current accessibility work.
The orchestral articulation profile standardises articulation data that previously depends on library-specific key switches. In the example, a Cubase 15 prototype supports MIDI 2.0 articulations, while an Audio Impressions library reads articulation data embedded in the note-on message. This allows articulation changes to be edited as MIDI data.
Network MIDI 2 runs at OS level on Windows and Mac. The setup routes a Roland A-88 through Cubase on Windows, over Network MIDI 2 to a Mac running Ivory 3. It supports higher-resolution MIDI 2 data, including 16-bit velocity and 32-bit CC messages, and is mainly intended for LAN-based studio setups. Windows support is available via a Microsoft download pack, while Apple includes it in OS 27 GoldenGate.
Accessibility work includes MIDI 2 chord transmission, FlexData text possibilities, and Tonaline, a plug-in that keeps incoming MIDI data in key while preserving rhythm, velocity and expression. BLE MIDI 2 is expected in early 2027.
