Youtuber Jenovi has dropped an eye-opening video about Sega's ill-fated 32X. 1994's mushroom-shaped expansion granted the Sega Megadrive/Genesis new 32-bit capabilities, as well as stereo PWM output - a way of producing medium-fidelity PCM samples. If more tracks are required, the dual Hitachi CPUs can be called upon to mix down multiple tracks to the stereo output.
"Developing for the 32X over the last few years has raised questions I wanted to answer about the hardware's true limits. One of the first areas I explored was its audio capabilities.
To better understand what I found, let's look at the audio foundations, what Sega planned, what games actually used, and what was left on the table for us to explore today."

At one point, there's 16 channels of PCM going, wild! Anyhow, this is Paulee signing off, stay retro!
