Bitwig Studio can now open your DJ library as a project. Berlin-based Bitwig worked with AlphaTheta, the Japanese company behind rekordbox, to join up DJing and production workflows - and from version 6.1.4 the DAW reads a rekordbox library along with its track analysis data.
If rekordbox is installed on the machine, Bitwig automatically lists the library as a location in the right-hand Browser Panel, where it can be searched and filtered by artist, genre, playlist and more. As with any Bitwig browser location, filters can be combined to narrow things down.

Double-clicking or right-clicking a track opens it as a new Bitwig project matched to that track's tempo and key. Hot Cues set in rekordbox arrive as cue markers to orient you, tracks can be split into clips based on rekordbox's song structure analysis or on your own cues, and vocal positions can be shown as dummy clips so the useful sections are easy to find.
The tempo connection works in the other direction too. Bitwig now uses rekordbox tempo data on any analyzed track dragged into a project, so the grid you set up in rekordbox - auto-detected or manually adjusted - is available in Bitwig.
That should mean quicker edits and remixes, pre-cut clips dragged into the Launcher to sketch a new arrangement, BPM-matched loops under existing percussion, or synth parts quantized to the key of the source. Bitwig is describing this as a way to use performance knowledge as studio material rather than treating a DJ collection as a separate library.
Stem separation is also coming to all editions of Bitwig Studio this winter, which will let tracks be pulled into their component parts once they are in the DAW.
The integration is out now in Bitwig Studio 6.1.4, available to Bitwig Studio, Producer and Essentials users with an active upgrade plan. rekordbox version 6.x or later must be installed, and rekordbox runs on macOS and Windows.
