LTJ Bukem & 4hero Interviews From 1996

US Breakbeat pioneers on independence & exploring new territories      19/08/26

LTJ Bukem is a hugely influential British musician, producer and DJ, heading up his record label Good Looking, largely associated with the jazzy, atmospheric side of Jungle music - and a true pioneer of new sounds in the genre. Here he is interviewed in 1996, courtesy of Video Stock Archives. Creator of the incredible 'Logical Progressions', his work forged the path for many producers and styles to come - also released in 1996.

Here's more from the vid:

Elegant, charming LTJ Bukem in his late 20s, despite a cold talking extensively and detailed on his attitude towards making music, his interest in all kinds of music like Soul, HipHop, Jazz or Detroit Techno, all of these genres being an influence on his styles. On getting his first set of decks in 1989. On the rave movement having been the scene for him to come out and thrive. On his label "Good Looking Records" and his publicising politics, the artists on his label like Aquarius (aka Photek), Peshay, Blame, Seba, Source Direct, Artemis and others...

4hero are an electronic music group from London, made up of producers Mark "Marc Mac" Clair & Denis "Dego" McFarlane. They're known for being pioneers of breakbeat hardcore, jungle/drum and bass, broken beat and nu jazz music.

This interview is not quite as comfortable as the LTJ Bukem one, but worth a listen...

4hero, represented by founders Denis "Dego" McFarlane and Marc Mac, interviewed at the office of their record label Reinforced Records, quote the first star of drum `n bass, Goldie, whom they already early on had on their label, saying, that "4hero was making the manual of drum `n bass". On the importance of independence, and how it was made possible by the upcoming of digital technologies. Their constant interest in exploring new territories, searching for the sound not heard before. How they try to combine hard edge and smoothness, and how their music is not necessarily for clubs, but also to be listened to at home...

Here's a little taster:
