Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 More Power, Layers

US And Aphex Twin Collaboration      05/03/26

Not Waldorf's best kept secret, but they are on a roll - such a hectic schedule of releases - they are smashing it. And today they announced the Iridium Desktop MK2, a significant hardware refresh to the 2020 original, bolstering the internal engine to support 4-part multitimbral setups and a new synthesis method born from a collaboration with Aphex Twin. From the images it looks as if the stellar build quality has been retained too - which was a definite 'thing' of the original.

Waldorf Iridium MK2

  • Per-Note-Parameter-Locks (ft. Aphex Twin)

    • Developed in collaboration with Aphex Twin, this system allows for highly specific note gymnastics.
    • Users can hold a note and tweak up to 16 parameters; that note remembers those settings independently of others.
    • Crucially, you can alter the synthesis mode or effect sends per note, saved within the patch, offering a level of micro-detail previously difficult to automate.
  • "Seeds" Synthesis (The Sixth Engine)

    • The increased RAM enables a new form of wavetable synthesis.
    • Instead of static waveforms, "Seeds" uses sub-oscillators to dynamically generate each waypoint in the table.
    • You can manipulate these seeds using Ring Modulation, FM, and partials, effectively letting you synthesize the wavetable itself.
  • Expanded Multitimbrality and CPU

    • An upgraded CPU board and expanded memory have pushed the layer count from 2 to 4 parts.
    • This introduces advanced playback modes like Round-Robin and Random-Robin, which are invaluable for creating organic, non-repetitive textures or drum sounds.
    • The extra RAM also supports larger sample capacities, though the exact duration limits depend on user projects.
  • Protein-Derived "Flavour"

    • Migrating a feature from the Protein synth, the "Flavour" knob introduces micro-variations.
    • It adjusts timing, timbre, and pitch to simulate analog drift or randomized humanization, adding life to otherwise sterile digital patches.
  • OS 4.0 for Older Units

    • Original Quantum and Iridium owners receive a firmware update soon.
    • Version 4.0 brings a "Mutator" patch randomizer, a new polyphonic arpeggiator, and microtonal scaling support, ensuring the first-generation hardware remains relevant.

Waldorf iridium MK2 side
At a price of 2.399,00 EUR, the Iridium Desktop MK2 is built for the sound designer and cinematic composer who needs extra density. The move to four multi-timbral parts and the ability to program per-note variations adds significant new features. While the price sits in the premium bracket, the ability to run four distinct, complex patches - each capable of Round-Robin variation makes it a contender for your flagship sound design synth.
