Production-Expert.com a well respected site aimed at audio professionals, recently ran a survey asking their readers about how and if AI was used in their day-to-day work. The results are in - the full article can be read here and is well worth a look.
They start off by defining what they mean by AI, as they make the valid point that there are technologies that claim to be AI but are perhaps more aligned with machine learning or advanced automation techniques than are pure artificial intelligence. They also discern between Music Professionals (presumably those who compose and mix) and Post Production (film/tv etc), asking about Assistive AI and Generative AI usage.
Music Professionals:
76.7% use some form of AI
23.3% do not use AI
Breakdown of users:
Assistive AI only – 51.4%
Both assistive and generative (occasional use) – 17.1%
Both daily – 6.7%
Generative only – 1.6%
Post-Production Results
89.2% use AI tools
10.8% do not use AI
Breakdown of users:
Assistive AI only – 63.7%
Both daily – 13.7%
Both occasionally – 11.0%
Generative only – 0.8%
An interesting set of figures, and perhaps while not entirely surprising, it seems to be at odds with the pushback we see in comments here and online generally - though thankfully, generative AI is still relatively low in its usage.
