Portastudio Sound Emulated

Audio Herz has released the Mk.pre preamp and drive module (VST/AU/AAX)based on the sound of a preamp from a Tascam 424 portastudio, something that's been revived recently with the JHS 424 pedal. Here's the details direct from the company...

Mk.pre delivers the legendary sound of the 424 MkI preamp. Reimagined as a plugin, it gives you rich, colorful cleans, gritty overdrive, and blown-out fuzz. This is the tone that defined 90s lo-fi and now drives today's indie guitar scene.

The 424 transformed home recording in the '80s and '90s, bringing multitrack cassette decks into bedrooms and garages everywhere. Entire genres were born on these machines, from Springsteen's Nebraska to underground hip-hop to DIY indie. The MkI model stood out for its raw, mid-forward preamp that could turn the simplest sound into something urgent and alive. Mk.pre captures that exact character and puts it in your DAW.

No Rare Gear. No Pricey Pedals.
Before Mk.pre, the only way to get this tone was by chasing down old hardware or buying boutique pedals. Some of those pedals run over $250 and still miss the mark. Mk.pre delivers the unmistakable 424 tone instantly, without the hassle or the price tag.

Unique Color, Not Another Generic Saturator
It is not a tape sim or a generic saturator. It's the 424 preamp in all its imperfect glory. Colorful, raw, and one of a kind.

Legendary for its raw, mid-forward guitar crunch. But the same preamp character also elevates bass, drums, synths, and more. Whatever you run through it, Mk.pre injects grit, color, and energy.

Mk.pre Includes:

• 424 Preamp Model – Authentic emulation of the classic MkI input stage.
• One-Knob Control – Fast, intuitive control with no menus.
• Harmonic Drive – From subtle color to fuzzed-out destruction.
• Versatile Tone – Iconic on guitar, equally colorful on bass, drums, and synths.
• Dynamic Gain Staging – Responds like real hardware.
