A Track Made With The Ultra Rare Yamaha VP-1

US Wonderland by Christian Halten - SKYLIFE      04/08/25

Its not every day you get someone sending you a track made by one of the rarest synths -  the legendary Yamaha VP-1 - the physical modelling monster from 1994. Christian Halten  aka SKYLIFE got in touch to let us know about a video he posted where the track Wonderland was used to score against game footage. It's very atmospheric and orchestral.

Here's what he told us:

'Wonderland' to YT  is completely made with the rare Yamaha VP1. There are only very few demos available online, most of them date back to the mid 1990s. It was a fantastic experience to rediscover this instrument now in a cinematic context. Wonderland was recorded live with extensive usage of the on-board real-time controllers like expression and 'scene' pedals and wheels/track ball. Recording just the stereo out of the VP1 with no additional treatment shows the immense dynamics and sound shaping possibilities of the VP1 which is still absolutely impressive in 2025. At the time in 1994 it must have felt like alien technology.

Using an editor for mac OS 9  to create new sounds on the instrument.

The arrangement was recorded using live overdubs, no other instruments nor external effects came into play. The visuals for the track derive from the homebrew game Solitude by Jerboa Entertainment with kind permission. It was programmed and designed by 4 friends, between 16 and 18 years old, for a school game project. Solitude is available for free on Steam from the link below.
