We had a chat with Jason from Instruo, who introduced us to the Seashell synthesizer at Superbooth 2025. This marks Instro's initial foray into non-Eurorack form factors, presenting a self-contained desktop semi-modular synthesizer. The device features a hybrid workflow with analog signal paths, two oscillators, a wave folder, and a filter. With TRS MIDI on the back, it connects seamlessly to MIDI keyboards. A notable aspect is its class-compliant audio and MIDI capabilities, allowing it to serve as a sound card via USB-C. The VST plug-in offers virtual control within a digital audio workstation, supporting expanded patchability with features like an LFO and a matrix mixer. Ed highlighted the unique filter design, which mimics the behavior of a Vactrol filter. The Mollusk, priced at £649, aims to integrate well into both analog and digital production environments, providing an accessible point for venturing into modular synthesis without a full rig.
