GearFest UK 22: Origin Effects Pedals

US Cali76 and more      05/07/22

Back before lockdown I visited Gaz Williams' studio and he was raving about the new pedal he'd just purchased, the Cali76 from UK effects company Origin Effects.

Gaz said it was a version of the famous studio compressor the 1176 - and to be honest I was a little dubious about that claim. That is, until he plugged it in.

OK, I thought, that's pretty impressive for a guitar pedal - yeah, I can see why this thing has got a bit of a reputation.

So when I walked into one of the spaces at Tileyard and saw a table with a load of Origin Effects units, I had to take a peek. Then have a listen. And it's very impressive sounding gear, I must admit.

John Dines gave me a demo of some of their guitar range, including some Cali76 versions and 'amp-in-a-box' pedals, then went through the new Bass pedals:

The Super Vintage is modelled after the Ampeg SVT, a legendary bass amp workhorse capable of a really wide range of sounds, from smooth to gnarly.

The 64 Black Panel is based on a range of 1960's high-powered Fender amps including the Showman and the Bassman

There's also a bass-specific version of the Cali76 which is designed to cope better with all the low-end energy hitting the compressor from a bass.
