One of the treats of an AES Show is bumping into guru-of-all-things-ribbon Wes Dooley from AEA, and when I saw a top hat on a desk, I assumed the owner was around somewhere... but Wes was nowhere to be seen.

Instead on the AEA stand I found Julian David, who gave me a quick tour of their new KU4 unidirectional ribbon mic.

It's a huge beast too - modelled after the legendary KU-3A microphone, created by RCA for the Hollywood film industry back in the 1940s.

Apparently it's designed to minimise the proximity effect, meaning that it's quite at home for close mic-ing in small spaces.

You can find more about it, and a host more great ribbon mic information at:-
