Of interest at the Studio Projects booth was their SP-828 8 channel mic preamp and mixer unit. The SP-828 can be used as a straight eight channel mic pre, as it has direct outs for each channel. However, it is also a mixer that has both stereo and mono outputs with volume control. Additionally, each preamp/channel has both preamp and mixer style features. First, each channel has both XLR and line inputs on the rear panel, which can be selected via a front panel switch. Very nifty. Each channel features a gain control, 48v phantom power, phase reverse, and peak and signal present indicators. Moving on to more mixer oriented features, each channel on the SP-828 has level and pan, and a solo switch with LED. In addition, four SP-828's can be chained via rear panel cascade cables to create a 32 channel mixer. The last unit in the chain functions as the master. This preamp/mixer seemed like it could be a handy tool for many different things. Obviously, it would work well as 8 separate preamps, or a mic mixer. But it could also be useful as a keyboard line mixer, a drum submixer, or for any number of other purposes. Studio Projects expects to ship the SP-828 in 8 weeks, and the list price is pegged at $799. Albert
