We spoke to Entropy & Sons about the Recursion Studio 4K, the company's 4K-capable video synthesizer. The new model follows the earlier HD version and adds updated electronics, a better touchscreen, improved ADCs, and a processor that is ten times more capable.
Recursion Studio 4K renders in 4K, runs more complex algorithms, and is backwards compatible with content from the HD model. It reacts to audio, video, MIDI and CV, with eight rear-panel CV inputs operating at audio rate from -5V to +5V. It also supports an eighth-inch audio input, USB microphones, camera sources and HDMI output, although only one of the two HDMI outputs is active at present.
The system includes around 500 modules and roughly 1,000 presets. Modules include generators, effects, CRT simulation, cel shading, 2D and 3D oscilloscopes, and a new 3D geometry system. Patches can start from presets or from nine instrument-style starting points, including a video mixer that handles up to four 4K video channels. Parameters can be edited directly and modulated with LFOs.
Recursion Studio 4K is available now for $1,600, with a short-term $100 discount code mentioned in the video. The HD model remains available at $900 and stays in active development.
