Creating Daft Punk's Helmets

US Making and iterating iconic headgear with Tony Gardner      01/10/24

The now defunct or should that be ... da-funked (I'll get my coat...) Daft Punk played a huge part in the electronic music of the late 90s and well into the 21st Century. In this video we hear another side of their story, from Tony Gardner who created their iconic helmets, which they used up to the final moment they were together...shown below. For those interested in the more theatrical side of music and performance, it's a fascinating conversation with loads to learn.

Join Kyra and Tony Gardner as they discuss his work creating Daft Punk's iconic helmets. Hear how his team had to pull in a range of specialists from jumbotron technicians, to astronauts and... auto body shops? Once again it is a reminder of Kyra's unconventional childhood since she knew Daft Punk's faces since she was around ten years old, and their helmets were at her dad's work since she was a toddler. The two discuss the creation of the helmet designs and get into some of the changes to their helmets and costumes over the years.

Here's a nice compilation of every piece of studio or behind the scenes footage seen in their Memory Tapes series:

Followed by the series itself with a host of guests including Julian Casablancas, Pharell Williams and Nile Rogers.
