UK Garage (or UKG) for short) is an incredible fusion of many genres, resulting in punchy, melodic and bass heavy sound which resonated most strongly through the 1990s. In this video Thomman's Jonas goes over producing a UKG 2-step banger (do people still say that?) - starting off with the drums which always had a swung, staccato nature. Here it is in their words alongside mention of a giveaway to coincide with the video:
This week we will have a little time travel back to the 90s for a UK Garage tutorial. Jonas demonstrates the fundamental elements of classic UKG from Drums to Chords, Vocals and Bassline. Moreover we teamed up with Polyend for a little giveaway that perfectly fits this genre.
It's a great overview of how to produce the genre, which produced some absolute classics - see NME's opinion on the top 25 UKG tunes here. Here's a list by the Guardian too - which quite rightly includes the following tracks:
Sticky ft Ms Dynamite - Booo! (wait for the main drop.....)
Double 99 -RIP Groove
