Love Hulten is a Swedish artist and craftsman fusing traditional artisan knowledge with modern technology. His latest creation is Voxarray 61, which combines various items of hardware to create a modular music-making environment.

He says, "I want my objects to create a state of curiosity – not just nostalgia. Nostalgia is involved to a certain extent, yes, but not by looking backwards. It's by taking steps in different directions simultaneously by using fragments from both the past and the present, creating unique and balanced objects."

"Voxarray 61 is a modular music environment, and a tribute to iconic synthesizers from the 70's. It's main body, crafted from ash, is divided into two segments. This clamshell construction rests on a weighty 4-legged stand handmade from steel. A ball handle applied to fold/open the lid doubles as pitch and modulation when detached and inserted next to the semi-weighted MIDI keyboard. The top lid stores an array of analog and digital audio modules, and like most module synthesizers, they all connect using a variety of patch cords, creating a matrix patching system. To use external devices, just patch them through the matrix. Add the custom-made dynamic microphone on top to complete the setup."

Hardware:

  • Meeblip Anode monophonic synthesizer
  • PianoBox Mini MIDI module
  • TC Helicon VoiceTone C1 hardtune and correction
  • TC Electronic M350 effects and reverb processor
  • TC Electronic Ditto Looper
  • Boss OS-2  overDrive/distortion
  • Behringer UM2 audio interface
  • Behringer MS16 monitors
  • Sennheiser E835 dynamic microphone
