Ryk Modular has moved into making effects with Side FX, a quad algorithmic processor for Eurorack. Rather than one effect at a time, Side FX runs up to four effect blocks at once and lets you arrange them in serial and parallel combinations under seven different chain algorithms.
You can run a pitch-shifted delay into a reverb with chorus on top, or phaser into glitch with a bit of bit crush to taste, and save the result as a preset. The seven algorithms cover various serial and parallel layouts, including dual-mono chains for two separate dual-effect mono processes, so a single module can handle two independent effect chains.
The current effect blocks on board:
Four user-definable CV inputs can be assigned to any parameter, and there is a clock input for keeping time-based effects synchronised, plus a MIDI input that covers the same ground over MIDI. If you have no spare LFO in the rack, Side FX provides its own LFOs, a random source and an envelope follower to keep parameters moving. FX sends on each block can be opened by hand or via CV, so an effect can be brought in by whatever you want to use to send CV.
Side FX ships with a bank of preset FX chains, running from gentle grit through to more extreme processing, and user presets are stored on an internal SD card that can be removed and shared.
The module is 14 HP wide and 25 mm deep, drawing 10 mA on the -12V rail and 300 mA on +12V. Price is £330 excluding tax, and Ryk Modular says Side FX launches and ships on 15th October.
