Unfinished Don Buchla Design Revived

The 277t Signal Delay Unit by Buchla and Tiptop Audio, the latest release from their  200 series, is another rare, unfinished design by Don Buchla. This is what they have to say about it...

In 1972, when tape delays dominated the landscape, a new digital technology for delaying audio was emerging, and the 277 was Don's attempt to build one. This was the era that saw the birth of digital audio effects. But Don's design was not intended as an effects module. Instead, it was a signal delay unit--which could become a delay effect (among other things) when patched in various ways with other modules in his 200 series.

It's hard to say why Don never finished his work on this, but we have attempted to follow the same concept of using an analog clock to push data through a buffer, drawing on our years of experience doing exactly that in other products we've made. We are happy with the results and believe this is a faithful recreation of Don's original concept, now brought to life.
