RØDECaster Video Update Adds 4K Capture And NDI Distribution

RØDE has released RØDECaster Video 1.4, a free firmware update for the RØDECaster Video, Video S and Video Core consoles. The really big  addition is a 4K Capture Mode that turns each console from a switcher into a UHD capture and distribution hub. Currently, there's little out there that can do this, though we're not sure how it handles disk write speed...

In 4K Capture Mode the console takes multiple UHD30 camera feeds over HDMI - four on the Video, three on the Video S and Video Core - and sends each one out as its own NDI stream at UHD30, ready to pull into OBS, eCamm Live or any other NDI-aware system on the network. At the same time every source can be recorded as an isolated 4K track to an external SSD in H.264 or H.265, handing editors independent files for the grade instead of a flattened program mix.

There is a trade-off. To reach those resolutions, much of the switching, scene arrangement, keying and media functionality is reduced or simplified in this mode - it all stays fully functional in the default FHD Switching Mode, so you choose the mode that suits the job. A third mode, Full HD Capture, does the same work at 1080p60 across multiple feeds. Both capture modes are throughput modes: the octa-core engine is focused on capture and distribution, with the full RØDE audio mixer running alongside and every NDI output available as its own custom mix.

RØDECaster Sync across the family - Sync was introduced on the Video Core, and 1.4 extends it to the Video and Video S. A single USB-C cable links any RØDECaster Video console to a RØDECaster Pro II or Duo, merging them into one studio. The Pro II or Duo's faders, mute and listen buttons, SMART pads and touchscreen then control video and audio alike, with a new Video SMART Pad type handling switching, scenes, media, overlays and auto-switching. The two units share a single nine-channel mixer drawn from any input on either device, and everything records to the Video's drive, keeping audio and video together in one place.

Premiere Pro timeline export - OTIO timeline export now joins the DaVinci Resolve EDL export added in version 1.3, so a multi-camera show can be reconstructed in post for fine adjustments.

Other additions - audio can now be taken from any compatible USB webcam, and keyboard shortcuts have been added to the Scene Builder in the RØDECaster App, effectively turning a computer keyboard into a switching surface.

"With 1.4, a single free update turns these consoles into a full 4K capture and distribution system and brings RØDECaster Sync to the entire family," said RØDE CEO James Hocking.

For anyone running a multi-camera setup on a modest budget, this update that changes what the box is for. The same hardware now covers live switching and isolated 4K capture for a later edit, and it costs nothing for existing owners of all three consoles.
