Noir Et Blanc Vie is here to take a look at the $250,000 Synth which ended up replacing Frank Zappa's band. The Synclavier (and in this case, the biggest Synclavier ever put together) was able to sample at twice the rate of a CD at a time when CDs were brand new. According to the video, the main advantage of the system was that Zappa could type in the melodies he had in his head, instead of torturing musicians - and subtracting the human element, which he calls "the most unreliable part of doing music". Here's more from the vid...
I don't think I expected to ever do a Frank Zappa related synth video, but I knew of this album and fortunately enough found enough interviews and footage to tell a fun story. I'm not personally a huge fan of the Synclavier, but I totally respect what it did in it's time, I'm younger so I can't say I'd know what it was like back then, but a system like that, with that much synth and sampling horse power must have been incredible. The main focus here is that technology changes, times change, but as humans, as musicians, I think we're very simple. We still want to get out artistic ideas out. No matter what the medium, and if we can't get our ideas out one way, we'll go through almost anything to make it happen.
