An Instrument For Adventurous Composers?

Sonuscore has announced The Sculpture, which they describe as an instrument made for the adventurous composer. They tell us that it is built entirely from recordings of a single hand-built metal sound sculpture, with every sound in the instrument coming from one physical object, captured across four microphone positions and shaped into two playable instruments for a truly distinctive palette of sounds. One Object, Recorded in Full
There are roughly 10 of these sculptures worldwide. Each is built by hand, no two are the same, and none are commercially available.

Sonuscore recorded one across its whole body: the large upper and lower plates, which ring with an almost synth-like weight when struck, and the thin connecting rods, which reveal fine granular detail under a bow.

Bowing the rods produces a long, sustained, almost vocal tone. Striking the plates delivers impact. Working the rods with mallets produces texture. Nothing in the instrument is layered from another source. Composers hear the object itself.

Four Microphone Perspectives
The sculpture was captured from four positions: close, far, contact, and a Blumlein pair set inside the structure to record its internal resonance. This internal pair is unusual among sample libraries and lets composers place the sound from tight and present to wide and roomy, or sit inside the metal and hear it resonate from within.

Two Instruments From One Source
The Sculpture ships as two instruments. The Single instrument gives direct access to the original recordings across all four microphone perspectives, designed for composers and sound designers who want the raw object under their fingers. The Engine layers five voices: two freely playable, two arpeggiators, and one granular, with slot and master effects for building evolving sound design from the same source material.
