Steinberg 30 years Of VST, Halion and Freebies

US HALion 7.5 free, Classic VSTs return as freebies      04/08/26

How time flies eh? Its been 30 years since Steinberg introduced Virtual Studio Technology and 25 years of the HALion platform with a free update to HALion 7.5, the return of several classic VST instruments, and an anniversary sale running from August 4 to 24. According to the definition of vintage, that qualifies them both!

VST, introduced in 1996, gave developers a standardised way to build plug-ins for PC and Mac DAWs. HALion, which arrived in 2001, has grown into a professional synth and sampler platform combining six synthesis types, a sample engine, effects and scripting.

The free HALion 7.5 update adds MPE support, real-time Decompose and Spectral Snapshot. Alongside this, the VST SDK has been updated with more MIDI 2.0 functionality.

Steinberg is also making the free Steinberg Classics Collection available, updated to VST 3. It includes several of the first Steinberg plug-ins: the LM7 retro drum sample unit, the CS-40 and Neon synthesizers, the VB-1 bass instrument, and Karlette vintage tape delay.

The anniversary sale also offers discounts of between 50% and 60% on HALion and a wide range of VST instruments, including Backbone, Etude, Iconica Ensembles and instrument/vocal libraries from partner developers. iOS and Android apps are 25% off via the App Store and Google Play.

Price: HALion 7.5 is free for existing users; Steinberg Classics Collection is free. Selected instruments are 50-60% off until August 24.
