Iconic Instruments Detroit Drums: 60s R&B Kits

US Per-Drum controls      11/06/26

Iconic Instruments have released Detroit Drums, a pair of virtual acoustic drum instruments built around two 1960s-era kits recorded through a vintage mixing console, with per-drum tuning and dampening controls that let you reshape the kit without leaving the plugin. We're guessing L might be Ludwig and S Slingerland?

ED: I confess I have a hankering for these sounds, having once owned a classic Rogers kit from the same era. Classic Philly, Motown, Meters and James Brown breakbeat stuff.

  • Two kit models - L-Model and S-Model, sampled from 1960s kits using original heads and period cymbals
  • Per-drum controls - individual Tuning and Dampening for every drum and cymbal, letting you move from open bop to dry 70s studio sounds
  • Hi-Hat Pedal control - MIDI CC sweep between samples for closed-to-open hat gradations
  • Integrated 60s console - tube Drive per channel (Overheads, outside Bass, under Snare), Plate Reverb send with tail length and filtering, and a mix bus chain with a 660-style compressor, high/low-shelf EQ, and tape effect
  • Routing flexibility - internal Busing Matrix sends everything through the plugin's mix bus, or splits channels to individual DAW tracks
  • Performance options - Round Robin on/off, General MIDI or Chromatic MIDI mapping for expanded articulations
  • Presets - 10 drum/cymbal and 10 mixing setups included

If you are chasing the high-tuned, sometimes dampened drum sound of 60s R&B and early hip-hop records, then this might be worth a look.
Detroit Drums wraps the instruments and the signal path into one. The per-drum dampening is  not common in acoustic drum libraries, and it means you can dial in exactly how much deadness or ring sits in the kit.

Intro price of $79

Out now for $150 (intro $79) in VST/AU/AAX formats on Mac and Windows.
