At Superbooth 2026, we had a conversation with Václav from Bastl who introduced the Kalimba an innovative blend of traditional acoustic elements and modern electronic synthesis. Kalimba integrates physical modeling with FM synthesis to generate rich, varied sounds and utilizes unique MEMS microphones, akin to those found in smartphones, which capture the plucking nuances, allowing for intricate sound texture modulation and layering.
Ergonomically reminiscent of a Gameboy Advance, it includes a built-in speaker, multiple knobs for intuitive sound manipulation, and battery-powered portability for on-the-go creativity. You can exploit features like the arpeggiator and glide functions, or use its connectivity options, such as line-out and MIDI in/out, for versatile setup integration. Available on Kickstarter, the ISA C8X is priced around €420, with an expected retail increase post-launch. Additional information and backer opportunities can be found on their Kickstarter page.
