At Superbooth 2026 and we met up with Mylar Melodies who was delighted to introduce us to his new module designed in conjunction with Befaco the Random8
Random8 is an eight-channel random voltage generator that fits into 8HP and focuses on controlled variation rather than completely unpredictable behavior. Its main strength is the ability to move gradually between randomness, repetition, and slow evolution, which makes it particularly useful in performance-oriented systems.
At its core, the module generates eight random voltages whenever it receives a clock or gate signal. Channels are internally chained together, though connections can be broken by patching into lower inputs. Each channel also includes its own output attenuator for adjusting voltage range.
What makes RANDOM8 more flexible than a typical random source is the looping system. At any point, a channel can capture and repeat its recent voltages, effectively turning random movement into a repeating pattern. A second mode allows those loops to evolve gradually over time rather than changing immediately, which creates slower, less abrupt modulation shifts. During use, it becomes easy to alternate between fixed patterns, evolving sequences, and fully random behavior depending on what the patch needs.
The module also includes a fairly deep set of utilities considering its size. Each channel can access quantization with multiple scales, several random distribution styles, clock division, slew, offset, adjustable loop lengths, and preset storage. Some channels can function more like stepped or smooth LFOs depending on settings, while others are better suited to melodic sequencing or modulation duties.
Despite the number of features, the interface remains relatively direct. There is no screen, but the menu structure is intentionally shallow: holding a button enters a single layer of settings, and turning the knobs edits parameters across channels. In practice, it feels more immediate than the specification list might suggest, though there is still a learning curve compared to simpler random modules. In use, Random8 works less like a traditional sequencer and more like a system-wide modulation source that can introduce movement and variation across an entire patch. It is particularly effective in smaller systems where space is limited and modules are expected to cover several roles at once.
Random8 is available to preorder. Price: $325
