It's Superbooth 2026 and we met up with Cuckoo at the Auxy Booth to look at the Svensson 49 keyboard. Cuckoo has created sounds for the instrument which aims to provide friction-free creativity for musicians who don't want to get lost in the technical weeds of complex synths.
Svensson combines samples and wavetables to create sounds that move comfortably between acoustic and synthetic character, with many presets sitting somewhere in the middle. Many of the sounds blend synth elements with pianos and other acoustic instruments in a way that feels natural and easy to play.
One of Svensson's more practical ideas is its looping workflow. The keyboard continuously keeps track of what you play, so there's no need to start recording in advance. If you happen onto something worth keeping, pressing Loop captures it immediately.
The four sound categories can also function as separate loop parts, which makes building arrangements fairly straightforward. Loops aren't limited to a fixed length, and layering additional parts feels open-ended without becoming complicated.
Physically, Svensson has a solid and understated design. The chassis is metal with oak side panels, and manufacturing takes place in Germany. It uses a 49-key semi-weighted Fatar keyboard with velocity sensitivity, which gives it a more substantial feel than many compact digital keyboards. The built-in speaker, designed by Swedish speaker designer Ingvar Öhman, is capable enough for casual playing without external amplification. It's loud enough for small rooms and makes the instrument easy to use in more informal settings.
