Melbourne Instruments Updates NINA

Melbourne Instruments tells us that Firmware 3.0.0 for NINA Adds 12 polyphonic voices of Braids to its analog filters, bringing all 45 synthesis models of Mutable Instruments' Braids to NINA's analog engine. Here's their press release on the subject...

Melbourne Instruments has added the complete Mutable Instruments Braids engine - Émilie Gillet's celebrated open-source macro oscillator - to its desktop NINA polysynth. All 45 synthesis models run across 12 true polyphonic voices, each shaped by a dedicated, overdrivable analog filter. Layer Braids and analog VCOs across four multitimbral parts, morph between presets and sequence everything. The free firmware update is available now.

Braids was originally a mono Eurorack module - one voice, no internal filter, no modulation routing. On NINA, it becomes something else entirely. Switch layers and the motorised knobs snap to new positions. Morph between patches and they sweep in real time. Every modulation routing is visible on the panel the moment you select it. Braids has never been this hands-on.

Each waveform model is shaped by two expressive parameters, Timbre and Color, adapted from the original Braids module. These controls affect multiple tonal dimensions simultaneously, producing evolving, complex, and musically responsive sounds. When combined with Nina's 12-voice polyphonic and 4-part multitimbral engine, users gain a powerful synthesis platform capable of vast sonic exploration.

Macro Oscillator Mode introduces a diverse palette of waveform types, including:

• Analog VCO emulation
• Additive and digital synthesis
• Vowel/Formant synthesis
• 2-operator FM
• Simulation of string and wind instruments
• Wavetable synthesis with smooth XY interpolation
• Filtered, colored, and pitched noise
• Granular synthesis
• Electronic drum sound simulation

 

This update elevates Nina to a new level, further cementing itself as a premium analog polysynth - a powerhouse for experimental, generative, analog and digital synthesis.
