Return Of The MARF

Tiptop Audio has announced the official release of the reissue of the Don Buchla Multiple Arbitrary Function Generator Model 248t -- the MARF. What an exciting day -- this 1977 monster is ready. When we started working on the MARF, we realized that this was probably one of the most ambitious designs Don ever created. The sheer number of features and possibilities, its integration with the rest of the system, and the incredibly complex results it can produce are nothing short of a madman's vision for a device of its time in the musical landscape of 1977.

And here we are in 2026 -- this beast is no less powerful, and arguably even more relevant today than it ever was. It enables the creation of wonderfully odd, non-typical, non-symmetrical, and non-linear voltage movements for designing truly spectacular sounds and sequences.

The MARF took us over two years to develop. The process began with adapting its panel layout into a Eurorack format, followed by carefully interpreting each switch, jack, and knob -- and how they interact with one another. From there, we designed the hardware and eventually added presets, musical scales, and ART outputs.

With the help of many contributors, whose names you can find in the user manual (coming soon), we were able to validate both the functionality and stability of a system that can produce results ranging from carefully planned voltages to semi-random behaviors and complete chaos. We believe we've covered it all.
