Just announced on UK national radio, is the news that Look Mum No Computer - aka Sam Battle, who's been a guest on our own SonicTALK podcast, is to be the UK's official entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Yes, you did read that right - while the news seems about as surreal as things get, Sam is a long time fan of the Eurovision - which is somewhat of an institution in the UK with watching parties, and excellently snarky commentary from Graham Norton.
Sam says: (source: The Guardian)
I find it completely bonkers to be jumping on this wonderful and wild journey. I have always been a massive Eurovision fan, and I love the magical joy it brings to millions of people every year, so getting to join that legacy and fly the flag for the UK is an absolute honour that I am taking very seriously. I've been working a long-time creating, writing, and producing my own visions from scratch, and documenting my process. I will be bringing every ounce of my creativity to my performances, and I can't wait for everyone to hear and see what we've created. I hope Eurovision is ready to get synthesized!
Eurovision is a massive production, with staging and international collaboration about as high a standard as it gets for live entertainment. Sam says he will be documenting the process the whole way and will no doubt win a whole new layer of fans of his quirky boffin approach to music, electronics and engineering.
We'll try and get him on the show to tell us about it.
The song will get its first radio play, along with the first exclusive interview (I guess he won't be talking to us yet then!), on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds in the coming weeks.
