Linguistic Trends in K-Pop

US Otherwords search for meaning      10/02/26

Songs around the world come in all different languages, and in the case of many there are a mix of cultures, influences, and dialects. Here the brilliant Erica Brozovsky looks at the linguistic trends in K-Pop, and how a combination of English and Korean are used for all kinds of reasons - with replacement words making up rhymes, possessing a dual meaning or more for the audience. Fascinating stuff, here's the text from the vid..

As K-Pop slowly takes over the whole world, linguists have noticed it's changing the way people speak in multiple countries. Otherwords is a PBS web series on Storied that digs deep into this quintessential human trait of language and finds the fascinating, thought-provoking, and funny stories behind the words and sounds we take for granted. Incorporating the fields of biology, history, cultural studies, literature, and more, linguistics has something for everyone and offers a unique perspective on what it means to be human. Host: Erica Brozovsky, Ph.D.
