It's Spooky season, so at Magical Synth Adventure we've decided to celebrate the Top 13 WTF Haunted Synthesizers! The (entirely subjective) list covers all sorts of digital and hybrid oddities; from demonic Eurorack modules to obviously-possessed vintage equipment!
Here's the list - with additional videos where available:
13. Waldorf Blofeld
Samples, VA waveforms, all of them can FM each other within the Blofeld; This leads to some captivating, alien, haunted landscapes. The envelopes even loop at audio rates for weird, modulated textures.
12. 4MS Metamodule
The Metamodule really is a blank canvas. That said, this "VCV rack in a box" collection can be pushed very easily into the haunted and bizarre...It includes mutated Mutable Instruments firmwares, so you can explore creepy robot voices, or the sounds of mysterious numbers stations.
11. Liquid Sky D.Vices V4-CO & PPG W2.2 X4
Liquid Sky Devices have created some amazing wavetable modules. There's the VC40 and also, the PPG W2.2 X4. But it's with the glitch expander where these two synths become chaotic and haunted.

10. Roland V-Synth
The V-Synth combines Variphrase technology with COSM effects like waveshaping and side-band filters. This synthesizer can squish and stretch time. A variety of different cross mod types gives way to gnarly sounds!
9. Technics WSA-1
1995's WSA1 combines specially prepared samples called exciters with a variety of physically modeled resonators. There's plenty of control over the sound, including audio rate LFOs. There's also an expansion board filled with trash '90s hits and loops, but even these can be turned into something interesting with the WSA1.
8. Ensoniq EPS 16+
As a dedicated Transwave enthusiast, I couldn't not include an Ensoniq synth in here. The EPS16+ is much more than a sampler. There's some amazing built-in effects and you can scan through waveforms in a variety of odd ways. I'm only using the standard tools here like Transwave and Looper X, but there's a whole range of Wave Boy discs which add FM, vocoding, all sorts!
7. Mutable Shruthi-1
The Shruthi-1 combines 8-bit digital oscillators with a variety of filter boards. Here, I show off the Polivoks variant (with overdrive and filter FM) and the DSP Digital FX version - which features a variety of lofi delays, pitch shifting, ring modulation, a looper and more!
6. Kurzweil K2000

The K2000 is a PCM-based preset machine - one used by many TV executives back in the day. But it's also an insanely complex, VAST synthesizer, a modular program on a 1990s LCD panel. Many have got lost in this VAST maze, you could lose your mind!
5. Korg Nautilus/Kronos
With nine synth engines, the Nautilus and Kronos can create a lot of sonic chaos! My favourite engines? MOD7 - a 6 operator FM engine with PCM playback, ring modulation, 2 multi-mode filters etc, and MS20-EX. This variant has extra features that both the original analogue MS20 and the soft-synth "legacy version" do not. There's loads of envelopes and LFO's, plus extra jacks on the virtual panel - including separate oscillator outputs; handy for audio rate modulation!
You can even run engines into each other, fun!
4. Casio CTK-1000
1993's Casio CTK-1000 "IXA Sound Source" is a home keyboard with absolutely astounding semi-editable synth patches! Wavestation-like PCM pads? Check! Nonlinear Waveshaping/FM sounds? Check! Deep evolving textures? Check! It really is an amazing sounding machine, and the sole example of IXA. It's a shame that CASIO never released this as a pro-level synth, but I'm glad we got these sounds in some form :)
3. Beast Tek Modules
Beast Tek's Irukandji (8-bit) and Pixel Drum (12-bit) are a couple of Eurorack drum voices which excel at weird percussion sounds. Each features a large variety of algorithms, so it's impossible to get bored!
2. Gotharman's Polyspaze/Zaturn
Gotharman's instruments need little introduction. These are groove boxes like no other. Wave tables, samples, and all sorts of crazy effects.
1. Evolution EVS-1

And now the number one most WTF haunted synth! It's Evolution's EVS1. Yeah, it sounds haunting, but this was the only synth during recording which completely lost it's mind and crashed. It's definitely haunted! The EVS1 contains 28 algorithms, there's no front panel editing and only 20 user preset slots - but I absolutely adore it!
Thanks for stopping by, and let me know your favourite spooky synths :D
