33 Thousand BBC Sound Effects

the BBC have come under a lot of flack in recent years, being a national broadcaster and having to operate in a low attention economy faces a lot of challenges as well as retaining and being seen to retain impartiality.

But the good news is that they have provided a significant library to browse and download (mp3/ wav) of over 33,000 atmospheres and sound FX covering a massive range  - free for personal use, though you can also buy individual sounds for commercial use through the Prosoundeffects.com site.

There's even a mixer widget to allow you to layer up multiple sounds and download the sounds individually or record it to a separate file. The idea being to encourage you to create personal soundscapes to chill with or maybe to put you to sleep.

We recommend that you check the Terms if you plan to use anything for commercial purposes, but it's an interesting place just to browse sounds.
