SonicLAB: Dreadbox Artemis 6 Voice Polysynth

Full disclosure, I'm a bit of a fan of Dreadbox and I've been looking forward to getting my hands on this one for quite some time. Sadly this has meant waiting for a while, but I guess that's good as the firmware has had a couple of tweaks since its release.

With oscillators from the Nymphes/ Murmux and filters with links back to the OG Erebus MKII, utilising the Typhon UI but with way more dedicated control, and the Sinevibe effects (Distortion, Mod, Delay, Reverb) it's taken a lot of the good bits from past history.

The raw sound has that pleasing Dreadbox vibe, with interesting filters (4pole/2 pole per voice, plus a global resonant HPF as well.

Two LFOs (max 25Hz) two envelopes (not looping) plus Osc FM mode and filter mod bring some decent options, plus a basic mod matrix - velocity, , mod wheel, aftertouch, keyscale, CC 74 can all have up to 5 destinations  as many destinations as you like , each both positive and negative.

The Sinevibe effects are nicely tuned to the Dreadbox needs and as such integrate well, with parameters also being mod slot destinations.

I immediately gelled with the Artemis, and found myself frequently lost in sound while I should have been getting on with the review. The MPE compatibility also adds a lot of expression to the mix.

It's not all good news, the price of £1077 puts Artemis in a fairly crowded market - with some more digitally driven or mass-produced synths offering more voices or features. However, the sound is delightful, and if you like that Dreadbox sound, then this could be a natural progression.
With more firmware updates planned - such as LFO/ENV as mod sources and finessing of the display and whats shown, it will most likely keep on getting better.
