A new documentary about Superstar DJs has just been released, with a candid appraisal of the scene from Paul Oakenfold used as part of the promo. 'Waiting For The Drop: Rise of the Superstar DJs' is streaming now on Amazon and is said to be reliving "..the once-in-a-generation moment when record-spinning DJs became superstars and underground rave music exploded into an overground "EDM" festival scene - and captured the imagination of the world."
The Cast includes Paul Oakenfold, Tiësto, Sebastian Ingrosso, Kaskade, Hardwell, Nervo, Ferry Corsten, Amy Thomson, David Grutman, Neil Moffitt, Stephanie LaFera, James Barton, and Kai Song.
It's hard to disagree with him if you've ever mixed vinyl records - when you compare it to the loop-able, multiple cue points, and auto syncing of tracks which is ubiquitous today. The idea of a DJ set being on a knife edge is kind of lost - the subtle phasing of elements coming in and out of time is a thing of the past... and mixing is a more sterile and conservative process.
Hopefully the rest of the documentary is a little more uplifting!
