A Virtual SY77: SWAY

Sheaf music will soon be releasing a beta version of their new softsynth, Sway:

"SWAY is modeled after a famous 1989 synthesizer that combined FM synthesis with sample based synthesis. This combination allows for the creation of some unique timbres--from realistic to synthetic, and everything in between.

Patch compatibility means you can access the vast library of sounds made for the original hardware, in the form of SysEx files that can be imported. Patches made with SWAY can also be loaded into the original hardware by exporting them as SysEx files.

SWAY is still in development, with a private beta test launching soon. If you would like to be notified when the it's ready for release, please subscribe to the newsletter."

1989's SY77 (& TG77 rackmount version) is an incredibly powerful synthesizer, combining 6OP FM, PCM waveforms (which can modulate FM operators!), digital filters & effects into a superb package. Sway attempts to recreate all of these elements and be SYSEX compatible with the original device.

SWAY also cleverly skirts the legality around using Yamaha's original PCM waves:

'SWAY includes 112 preset waveforms and 80 expansion card waveforms. The preset waveforms are approximations of the original hardware's samples, recreated from scratch using a mix of custom recordings, public domain samples, and synthesis. The 80 expansion card waveforms are unique to SWAY.

You can also supply your own waveform ROM files, as long as they follow the original hardware's file format. This applies to both preset and card sources. Simply place your files in the ROM folder, and they will be loaded automatically. A future update will add support for loading your own audio files and building custom multisample waveforms.'
