Roland Mood Pan Might Be The Hand Drum You Need

If it were April, you might be forgiven thinking that this was a ruse, but Roland has introduced the Mood Pan, a new electronic hand percussion instrument that blends the functions of acoustic handpans with the functionality of a digital sound engine and speaker system.  They appear to be angling it towards wellness and meditation, though as we know, Roland's initial expectations for instruments often result in cult status (TB-303 I'm looking at you) but not sure if this will make the leap - time will tell. 

Battery life is quoted at around 4hrs (6x AA), and it does send MIDI  (with pressure data) over USB-C and Bluetooth, so it might well prove useful for accomplished pan drummers to interface with other sounds.

The Mood Pan (not to be confused with kitchen or bathroom fixtures) features nine responsive pads designed to be played with finger taps. These pads can be assigned to different tunings and scales which makes i more flexible than a hardware fixed tuning type drum. Additional sound control is provided through a dedicated modulation pad and the ability to mute or vary tone by touch.

Sound options include a variety of acoustic and electronic timbres such as:

• Handpan, tongue drum, and gamelan

• Crystal and singing bowls

• Sitar, orchestral strings, and synth pads

• Four user-assignable locations with editable sound variations

The integrated 2.1 speaker system supports ambient background playback and wireless Bluetooth streaming. For personal sessions, headphone output enables silent practice. Four environment modes (Morning, Evening, Relax, and Yoga) offer curated soundtracks, while users can also play nature sounds or use the Mood Pan as a standalone Bluetooth speaker.

The accompanying Mood Pan Plus app allows deeper control over onboard sounds, environmental audio, pad sensitivity, and effect settings. It also provides access to additional downloadable sounds.
