New Developments for 4MS' MetaModule

There's been a steady stream of exciting updates for 4MS's MetaModule, which we reviewed last month. We'll start with the first of many planned hardware expansions - the WIFI Eurorack expander.

The (presumably 4HP?) expander connects to the main unit via an 8-pin cable and offers the following features:

Quickly transfer patches you created on the computer and play them on your MetaModule without swapping disks or USB drives.

• Connects to an existing Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz, 802.11 b/g/n)
• Connects to MetaModule with included 2x4 cable.
• Point your web browser to the Wi-Fi Expander's address, and transfer patch files and browse the contents of the MetaModule,
• Firmware is updated by the MetaModule, so features can be expanded as the MetaModule evolves.

Personally, I make most of my patches on the device itself, so am keen to see forthcoming expansions that offer DIN MIDI, or further control possibilities (buttons, switches, etc), but I'm sure that some people will find this Wi-Fi expansion of great use. In terms of firmware, there's been a flurry of development around the device. Outside the usual bug fixes, new features include:

• More optional sample rates, including 32Khz, for those power-hungry patches.
• Max module limit is now 64
• Screensaver
• API for dynamic text displays in VCV-ported modules
• Patches are sorted alphabetically

In addition to this, version 2.0 is currently in the beta-testing phase and features plenty of workflow enhancements:

• Context Menus
• Raw MIDI Stream Support
• Support for a forthcoming Audio/CV Expander
• Min/max angle for knobs (to more accurately reflect their VCV counterparts)
• Display control values using same formatting as VCV Rack (units, base, offset, mult, precision, snap/integral)

Finally, more modules have been ported to the MM, yay! A number of Cosine Kitty's Sapphire modules have been ported, including interesting modulation sources and effects. Sadly, Elastika, their "hexagonal mesh of balls and springs" sound generator, has not been ported yet, requiring further optimisation.

Stellar Modular's Creative Suite, which includes all manner of impenetrable-yet-exciting looking sequencer and mixer modules has also been released. I feel that generating CV, gate & trigger voltages to feed other modules is one of the MetaModule's most rewarding functions - with plenty of connectivity and control, plus the ability to save your patch!

Finally, Vector modular has disclosed plans to port baseOsc, a versatile oscillator with analog waveforms, FM, PWM, wavetable synthesis, regular and digital noise, quantization, LFO mode, and bit reduction. This one is pretty exciting; more oscillator options are always welcome!

It feels like 4MS are off to a pretty good start with the MetaModule. Let's see where the story goes from here!
