Performance Accessory For Pocket Operators

MUSIC SYSTEMS LABS and CROWD SUPPLY have announced the launch of POCKET INTEGRATOR, an add-on board for Teenage Engineering's popular line of Pocket Operator drum machines and are looking for funding. They describe it as a versatile accessory that combines a MEMS accelerometer with an RP2040 microcontroller to let musicians control the tempo and downbeat of their Pocket Operators in a live performance setting, simply by tapping and shaking it like a percussion instrument.

MSL Chief Scientist Mykle Hansen, told us, "The main purpose of Pocket Integrator is to help electronic musicians and traditional musicians play live together. It also lets electronic musicians explore what a more human-sounding beat can add to their music. I hope that someday it will even let us create and share new firmwares, so that every Pocket Operator out there has a chance to evolve into something new. Pocket Operators are excellent instruments, and Pocket Integrator adds to their potential."

Here's more details in MSL's own words...

POCKET INTEGRATOR, developed by Music Systems Labs and launched with support from Crowd Supply, can synchronize any MIDI-capable software or synthesizer, or any device that accepts an analog sync signal. It features a USB-C interface that sends MIDI Clock messages over USB and provides battery-free power to the Pocket Operator. Two 3.5mm output ports provide audio, analog sync or classic MIDI outputs. The accelerometer also controls a digital maraca with wide dynamic range and tight action. Furthermore, Pocket Integrator can function as a debugger and firmware uploader for Pocket Integrators, allowing hobbyists & hackers to explore reprogramming these popular devices, and the board itself is released with an Open Hardware license so that anyone can modify or improve it. The board connects directly to the back of any Pocket Integrator; no tools are required for installation.
