Sonic LAB: Mac Book Pro 14 - Do You Really Need This Much Power?

More ports, more CPU, RAM and storage      19/11/21

Apple recently added to their range of SOC (system on a chip) M1 range with the new Mac Book Pro 14 and 16 inch models. Each feature the option to include the new M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs, more base memory and up to 8TB of blazing fast storage.

They also feature a return to ports - as well as three Thunderbolt 4 ports, there's a Magsafe 3 power, HDMI port (up to 4k 60fps HDR) and an SDXC card reader.

Apple sent us a base model unit, we take a look and see what the high specc'ed and higher priced unit has to offer.

We should add that we've ordered a 14" with a CPU upgraded to a 10 Core (+£200) and a 1TB upgraded SSD (base model is 512GB)

The 14" base unit is priced at £1899 and the 16" starts at  £2,399

14" MacBook Pro base model: M1 Pro SOC: 8-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 16GB unified Memory, 512GB Storage
16" MacBook Pro base model: M1 Pro SOC: 10 Core CPU, 16-Core GPU, 16GB Unified memory, 512GB Storage

M1 Pro CPU can be upgraded to 32GB RAM, the M1 Max to 64GB RAM
