The second video in our series of four - one for each of the new Yamaha ReFace range is the DX - this one has a 4 operator FM engine, twin effects, plus a phrase looper (as does the ReFace CS).

We were lucky enough to get a visit from Yamaha a little while back and shot some videos with Bert Smorenburg for each of the new units.

One thing that comes across when you feel all of these ReFace units, its how solidly they are built, solid and weighty, the mini keys (yes we know..) actually do feel way better than your average.

This ReFace DX makes the DX engine more immediate, with four touch controllers to get at the nuts and bolts of the DX engine. We like this one, though sadly, it doesn't look like it will load any of the existing 1000's of 4-op DX patches out there.

However, this one does have memories, and all ReFace models will come with an iOS app to work as a librarian, with parameters also responding to MIDI CC controller data.

Again, we hope to get our hands on one for a full review, but for now this is the best we can do for you.

  • FM Tone Generator (Frequency Modulation)
  • Eight note polyphony, switchable to monophonic mode
  • Four Operators
  • Twelve Algorithms
  • 32 memory locations for Voices
  • Seven Effects, two can be used in parallel
  • LCD display (128x64 pixels)
  • Touch sliders / switch
  • Phrase Looper

Price is expected to be £347 in the UK we don't have details on other currencies at present.
