The Show Off - Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom
This is a reasonably priced Gibson Les Paul (as for as Gibson Les Pauls go), it looks like one of the pricier ones, and it sounds sublime. This is the guitar you would keep at your house to show to your mates, perhaps take to the studio for recording sessions, and then once you’re playing in a venue big enough that you’re not sharing stage space with the audience, you can feel safe using it live.
It’s a Les Paul, I probably don’t really need to qualify this decision. It’s the guitar every kid grows up dreaming of owning one day.
Famous players:
Les Paul, Slash, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Zakk Wylde, Eric Clapton... just everyone really
Rather than justify the decision to include a Les Paul in this list, it might now be a good time to explain the omission of some of the big contenders.
A Fender Stratocaster hasn’t been included because of the choice to include a Jackson DK1 Dinky, which is a Super Strat. Therefore the Telecaster ‘72 pipped the standard Stratocaster to the post.
Newer innovations such as the Variax haven’t been included because I felt that was cheating somewhat, as the Variax can be manipulated to sound like almost any of the above. Nothing beats the real thing though!
So hopefully, if you survived the apocalypse and there were only five guitars left on Earth, you’d be pretty happy with this list.
But perhaps you disagree strongly? Submit your list in the same format above, with your name and location in an email to news@sonicstate.com and we’ll publish it on the site.
