Guitar Two

The Speed Freak - Jackson DK1 Dinky

I had a Jackson DKMG Dinky once, and I sold it because I was an absolute idiot. For the money I paid for it, it was pound-for-pound the best guitar I’ve ever played on.

Those high output EMGs just scream when you turn the gain up, and when you pull the coil tap it just sends the amp absolutely crazy with a much harsher distortion than the smooth tones produced in the standard configuration.

If I were to buy another Dinky I would go for the DK1, as I just couldn’t say no to that beautiful ebony fretboard. It’s just an absolute shred machine.

The flat neck profile used by Jackson is perfect for people who want to play fast, I’ve always found them particularly great for legato licks for some reason. I think the profile really helps you get your thumb positioning right and allows for a good anchor for your left hand when you’re trying to pull off and hammer on.

Some players find that they get a lot of unwanted harmonics when going into high levels of gain with a Super Strat, but Jackson pretty much wrote the book on Super Strats and they’ve always sold guitars with a rounded and clear tone.

Everything right down to the body contouring and crazy cobalt colours just help to pack so much personality into these guitars. If you survived the apocalypse and only had five guitars left, you’d want this to be one of them.

Famous players (of all Dinky models):

Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Christian Olde Wolbers
