Brian May To Receive Eddy Christiani Award

Queen guitarist up for honour   15-Mar-11

Brian May is to be the recipient of the 2011 Eddy Christiani Award.

Christiani is a Dutch guitarist, singer and composer. The award in his name is given to a musician each year for their importance to the world of music and development of the electric guitar.

"Brian May is one of the most influential guitarists of the last 40 years. May has influenced thousands guitar players all over the world and many current superstars started out playing guitar because of him," Jean-Paul Heck, the chairman of the award's jury, said in a statement.

Added Heck, "May's guitar play has an amazing recognisability. Within five seconds, you can hear that it is him. Together with Jimmy Page and Eddie van Halen, May belongs to the most influential guitarists of his generation."

May will receive the award on April 23 at the Arsenaaltheater in Vlissingen in the Dutch province of Zeeland.

This announcement comes in the same week that Roger Taylor is in the news for hinting at the possibility of more Queen material in the future.

Having spoke to Queenonline.com about the band's 40th Anniversary, Taylor said he would be open to doing more material:

“I would like to do some more new Queen material with Brian [May],” the drummer said.

He went on to talk about Paul Rogers and the Cosmos Rocks album:

“The Cosmos Rocks album was not at all bad and I thoroughly enjoyed the tours we did with Paul,” he said. “He is one of the finest singers alive. I regret that some people expected him to be Freddie; how crass.”

Whether they make new material, or decide to hold off, they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, as this footage of Brighton Rocks shows!
