NAMM 2017: Modular Round-up

US Thoughts and opinions on the modular world...      07/02/17

From Mono to Stereo, just like in the 1960s…

One other area of Eurorack that hasn’t fully been explored is stereo processing. If you come from a software world then everything is generally in stereo by default. The difficulty in the modular world is that in order to do stereo you need more processing power or more components which pushes the price up….

However it seems that the manufacturers are now starting to make many more stereo modules and this is evident from our NAMM coverage.

WMD

Wmd intro’d the performance mixer at NAMM last year and this year they were showing off a load of new bits and pieces to enhance the mixer and also work well with it in a modular context.

Their new stereo filter OVERSEER in particular was a highlight for me, really adding some much needed stereo filter action to the modular world.

Alex’s presentation here was also one of the slickest and most comprehensive I saw all show. He really knew his patch and was able to glide through it to show off different sections and relate them to the new modules. Big props as I am right in thinking this was his first NAMM doing presentations!

Industrial Music Electronics - Formally known as the Harvestman.

I think you could be mistaken in thinking that Scott Jaeger is shy on camera, I like to think of his tone as a particularly dry sense of wit. A comedy genius if you ask me…

Scott had three new modules to show off two of which were stereo processors, a filter Bionic Lester and a compressor Contempt.

Although we didn’t get to hear the modules as they are still in development we did get a good chat with Scott about the design and concept of the two new pieces. Contempt in particular was a highlight for me.

Rossum Electro-Music

I couldn’t talk about stereo in modular without mentioning Dave Rossum’s excellent Morpheus filter. Although not introduced at this years NAMM show it really is the most excited I’ve been about a module in many years.

We also gave Rossum Electro-Music our Best Modular award this year as we felt that Dave’s re-entry into the synthesizer world after a long absence was something that needed to be congratulated. He is really pushing the boundaries of the modular concept and making some totally unique designs.
