Wave Field Synthesis is behind the flat panel speakers on display at the Fraunhofer booth, explains Daniel Beer, who's responsible for Loudspeaker development at Fraunhofer IDMT.

Wave Field Synthesis was invented at the Delft University of Technology, and developed to maturity by Fraunhofer - the model on display uses an array of mini loudspeakers in individually acoustically sealed chambers, acting in concert driven by a processor controlled onboard class D amplifier.

So that's the tech side of things, further explained by Daniel - and they actually sounded pretty good, despite the noisy show floor environment.
