Samplers are incredibly affordable and portable nowadays, compared to the rack mounted beasts of the 1990s anyway! Here we have a simple sampler, from a seller in Vietnam, for sale on Tindie - as a fully assembled unit or a kit. It certianly looks the part, and has some very simple sampling features.
