Chipmusic Making With FamiStudio

US New DAW for NES / Famicom music makers      18/03/21

Chipmusic has been around since the dawn of early videogames, with many producers still using old consoles and computers to create evocative lo-fi music. FamiStudio is a new DAW for NES / Famicom owners to make chip music more intuitive and accessible - with a simple colourful interface, automation, clips and piano rolls. Here are some of the features:

  • Modern DAW-style UI with sequencer and piano roll, no hexadecimal anywhere
  • Instrument & Envelope edition
  • NSF import
  • DPCM sample editor (WAV and DMC support)
  • Full Undo/Redo support
  • Copy & Paste support
  • Note drag & drop with audio preview
  • Import from FamiTracker FTM & Text (official 0.4.6)
  • Export to various formats (WAV, ROM, NSF, FamiTone2, FamiStudio Text, FamiTracker Text)
  • Volume, fine pitch, vibrato effect tracks
  • Slide notes (portamento)
  • Arpeggios
  • NES sound engine (CA65, NESASM, ASM6)
  • MIDI input support
  • Audio expansions supported: VRC6, VRC7, FDS, MMC5, Namco 163 & Sunsoft S5B.
  • Windows, MacOS and Linux versions.

It allows for import and exporting of chipmusic and is said to make the process much easier than using the likes of FamiTracker. A full tutorial video has been made to show each of the features in detail and the entire source code is available on GitHub.
